So you just got a brand new flat screen TV! Just in time for this year’s March Madness action! Before you put the TV on the closest wall and pony up on the couch, be sure to place the Television in the right place to get the best viewing experience! Abbey Design Center has tremendous experience with object placement and can help guide you to find the perfect location for your flat screen TV. There are a few different factors you should consider. Follow the guide below to get the most out of your television viewing experience.

Television Placement:

Space:

No longer do you have to deal with the bulky entertainment systems of the past. Today’s flat screen’s offer great quality TV and take up minimal room. That same advantage can be a disadvantage however. Often times, individuals try to fill up their room more with furniture and other objects to make up for the “lost space”. We recommend that you place your Television in a place that is in plain view from all angles of the room. A great way to check this is to stand right in front of the TV and look back at the room to see anything that may be in the way. Move furniture around and angle objects differently to get the most possible viewing angles.

Height:

Another crucial factor when placing a TV in a living room is the height at which it will be displayed. While there is no “perfect” display height for a flat screen, different style rooms seem to dictate the ideal height for where to display the screen. For larger rooms with a long and wide viewing angle, it is better to hang your flat screen on the wall higher that you would for a short and wide room. Also high ceilings make for screens placed higher on the wall versus short ceilings.

Stand or No Stand:

Sometimes flat screen TV’s look better on a stand placed on a nice desk while other times they are more stylish when hung on a wall. It is all personal preference; however consider mounting the TV on the wall if you have a long room with high ceilings or a fireplace that is surrounded by a brick or stone fixture. Often times TV’s can look amazing above a fireplace or on a stylish desk if there is no fireplace in the room.

Art and Other Wall Mounts:

Refrain from displaying large pieces of art on the same wall as a flat screen TV. The TV should remain the focal point of the room and artwork can take away from the TV’s display. If you must hang art in the same room, make sure it is subtle and also symmetrical with the television.

As a dedicated client of ours, we wanted to show them our full support and give them a morning uplift by providing them with a full hot breakfast catered by professional chefs. As a strong advocate of contracting companies and a supporter of HITT Construction, Abbey Carpet felt that a nice breakfast for the employees of HITT was an appropriate way of showing our support. We at Abbey strongly believe that they deserved a treat for their continued hard work. This event was intended to be a casual meet and greet where current employees of HITT could mingle and chat while enjoying a delicious breakfast on us. We aim to please at Abbey carpet and we did just that through this sponsored event. The workers at HITT were very happy and delighted with the food, service and location.

This was one of the better events Abbey Design Center has ever sponsored. Everything went very smoothly and the chefs did an excellent job in preparing delicious food. We really enjoy sponsoring these functions and appreciate everything that HITT Construction has done for us.

As the winter draws to a close up here in Northern Virginia, most homeowners look forward to spring-cleaning and new opportunities to improve the exterior of their home with various improvements. Of all the exterior improvements and additions that one can do to his or her home, perhaps the most popular option is to build or change the appearance their homes deck or patio. The Deck and patio are very popular places in the spring and summertime as they give you the experience of being outside in the beautiful weather while also keeping you close to the comfort of your own home. They are great for cookouts, sunbathing and hosting small parties. A well-designed and attractive deck can accent your home and bring added fun and entertainment value. Not to mention, it greatly adds value to your home. While building or improving a deck may be a daunting or overwhelming task, there are some simple steps to take that will ensure you get a great final product that you can enjoy.

When designing or redesigning a deck, there are a couple aspects that you want to make sure it contains. You want your deck to be sturdy, resistant to damage, comfortable and visually appealing. While decks in the past were made of wood and gave you splinters, decayed over the years, and looked rotted or bland; decks nowadays can be made of new material like Vinyl and composite materials, which improve these qualities. At Abbey Design Center, we offer and install decks made from vinyl and composite materials for lasting beauty, low maintenance, and durability. Our product line is environmentally responsible manufactured with non-toxic materials, eliminating all hazardous chemicals and preservatives. Each vinyl and composite deck plank is slip resistant and splinter free. As decks have changed over the years, it may be a smart option to redesign your current deck or add on with these new types of options. We at Abbey encourage you to research all your options but take into consideration the numerous benefits of a new deck made to last!

The holiday season provides home owners with an excellent opportunity to spruce up their homes with decorations for all to enjoy. Whether it’s a Christmas tree, window ornaments, or lights on the outside of the house, there are a number of tips out there that will help you make your home as seasonal and stylish as it can be. In windows, wreaths or electric candles are always a good idea. This gives the house a contemporary holiday feel, especially at night when the candles glow in the windows. Although they may not be for everyone, hanging lights on the exterior of your house can really illuminate it and get everyone in the holiday spirit. However, over-doing the exterior lights can look tacky so be sure to use them sparingly. Another holiday essential is sparkle. Whether it is the ornaments on a tree or icicles hanging throughout the house, decorations that shimmer in the light make your home look wintery and decorative. If you’re a household that celebrates Christmas, a Christmas tree is a very traditional yet decorative piece that can make your house look and smell like the holidays. When setting up a tree, make sure it is in a location that is out of the way but can be seen easily. Locating the tree in a place that can be seen through a window from the road is always an option as well. Lighting the tree with either colored or white lights is up to the homeowners, and decorations such as ornaments, globes, and streamers are a great way to make the tree look nice as it illuminates the room.

Tables, end tables, and counter tops can be topped with spruce, candles, and pinecones, which make quick and easy décor for these areas, which can be difficult to decorate sometimes. Many times, people will wrap railings with spruce to add a seasonal touch to it. Next, for people who are feeling romantic during the holidays, hanging mistletoe somewhere in the house can make for a romantic scene for those fortunate enough to get stuck underneath it. This can be especially interesting at holiday parties. Finally, wreathes are a holiday decoration that are very traditional, and look great on exterior doors and over the fireplace. In addition to the wreath on the fireplace, hanging stockings on the fireplace gives people the opportunity to put small gifts or “Stocking Stuffers” in there as they come and go. Using all of these tips will ensure that your home looks nice, seasonal, and presentable during the holiday season.

Now that the temperature outside is starting to drop, it is necessary to take measures to make sure you and your family are comfortable You need to be safe from the bitter cold that can be encountered during this winter season. One way to ensure that no heat escapes from your house and no cold enters in is to change your windows and windowpanes. Although it can be costly to replace all your windows, it should never be seen as an expense. Rather than viewing it as an expense you should see it as an investment in your home. The benefits outweigh the actual cost of the replacement. Some of the benefits that come from changing your windows are:

- Increases resale value of your home by adding new features to the home

- Reduces cost of heating and air conditioning

- Reduces effect of the sun’s rays on your furniture and flooring by providing better UV ray protection

- Increases insulation

- Reduces noise pollution from both inside and outside

- Provides better security; hinders home invaders

Abbey Energy and Exteriors strives to provide these benefits and more. They provide the highest quality PVC materials and triple pane krypton gas insulation glass to ensure that you and your family are comfortable and safe. Prices will vary due to how much the materials are used and how quickly it can be done. It can be somewhat expensive at first, but replacing your windows can save hundreds of dollars on your heating and electricity bills and can increase the value of your house as well. You will also notice that your comfort level will increase as your home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. If you are interested in learning more don’t hesitate to visit us on Facebook and post a comment or question!

You’ve just installed hardwood flooring in your home and can’t wait to show it off to your neighbors and friends when it hits you; how can I maintain the new look and feel of this floor year round? Hardwood flooring can bring great joy to a household but it can be arduous and expensive to maintain its shine and sleek.

Dirt, sand and grit are hardwoods worst enemies. When on top of the hardwood with a lot of foot traffic, they can act like sandpaper, scrapping off the luster and finish that the wood has and can also cause dents, scratches and dulling to the wood as well. To prevent this all you have to do is either sweep it up or vacuum it up with special bare floor attachments. Another element that can hurt the life of your hardwood floor is any standing water. If left untreated, the standing water can warp the wood. If a spill occurs, you must clean it up if you want to keep the integrity of the floor. Sun damage can occur often if the wooden floor is exposed to sunlight. The flooring can be discolored and make it look older than it really is. It is smart to strategically place blinds on the windows to prevent the suns UV rays from damaging the floors themselves.

When cleaning and polishing the floors you should avoid any soap that contains oil in it. The oils can be built up and when it is time to place a maintenance coat on the floor, it can exploit the success of it. Instead of using oil based soap, use one that has a neutral pH level, which are made specifically for cleaning and maintain wooden floors. Using a damp mop can also be used to clean off dirt and dust if you’re hardwood floor still has its finish in good condition.

Waxing can be used to bring back the luster in your floor. The wax can be easily applied and buffed. By doing it this way, the floor will look brand new, and any scratches or dents will be on the wax not on the finish. The problem with wax is that it can hinder you from completely refinishing and recoating the floor. Waxing should be an option only if you do not plan on refinishing your floors.

By maintaining the condition of your hardwood floor, the value of your home can increase. It is simple to do so if you remember to never use oil based cleaners, always sweep or vacuum dirt up, and protect your flooring from the suns damaging UV rays.

Finding your room to be lacking luster? Want an easy way to bring life into the room? Rugs are your answer. If you are on a budget, rugs have the ability to drastically transform a room. They can aesthetically bring interest into a room. They can minimize sounds of pattering feet across the floor or the dust and dirt that are built up from foot traffic. Depending on the size, color, and material, you can find a rug that can fit the theme of any room in your home.

The size of a rug can be used for many different effects. If you chose to buy an area rug, be prepared to bring attention to the center of the room. You never want a rug to either to take too much space or too little space. The rug should never be more elegant than the furniture in the room so as to not take attention away from everything else. The thickness of a rug can make or break a room’s tone. In the bedroom, it is better to use a thicker rug because there is not as much foot traffic, but for a hall or living room it is wise to use a thinner rug. If you use a thicker rug, then its integrity will be compromised. The location of a rug is also very important. The key places for rugs are halls, living rooms, entrances, and foyers. These places experience the most amount of traffic so people will be able to see these mats.

If you like to constantly change the look of your room to give it a fresh look then synthetic rugs are a perfect match for you. They are relatively inexpensive, about $100 for a 6’ by 8’ rug. The material that they consist of can endure the wear and tear of constant foot traffic. Worried that they are going to get stained due to mud? No worries, if the rug is made up of cotton you can just place it in the wash and the stains will disappear without running the integrity of rug. No time to clean the rugs? Wool rugs can be a great alternative. They are stain resistant and their fiber can be revived by being vacuumed.

If you are looking for a long lasting rug then the hand knotted knots are your choice. Although they can be expensive these rugs look great in a room with little detail. The rugs are durable, have great features and can be turned over for a different design. Rugs are a cost effective way of changing a rooms design and bringing life to it.
